This is a quotation from page 98 of the 1990 "#1 National Bestseller" entitled "You Just Don't Understand: Women and Men in Conversation," by Deborah Tannen, Ph.D. The implication is that revealing secrets destroys friendship, a hypothesis that is clearly supported by the anectodal evidence of the Tripp/Lewinsky case. Apparently, friendship cannot endure the documentation and revelation of secrets anymore than can secrets themselves can survive public exposure.
