Growing awareness of the importance of records management coincides happily with the powerful new potential embodied in the consensus emerging around eXensible Markup Language. Since the speaker who follows me will address a number of XML initiatives in relation to the provisions of S. 803, I will not go into them in any detail. However, I do want to emphasize the bullets highlighted on this slide in red. I also want to note that in a digitally networked environment, the terms "management" and "metadata" are virtually synonymous. In addition, I want to acknowledge that DoD Std. 5015.2 is far from perfect or complete. However, XML is indeed a powerful new enabler of the capture and use of the metadata required to manage and share E-records more efficiently and effectively.
